No. How could I think that? She was just playing a little too rough. I still needed some space from her though. I’ll admit it; I was scared of her then. I took peroxide and dabbed at the long scars. It stung so bad. I felt hot tears stream down my cheeks. I dabbed at the blood and examined the cuts. They were deep. After I had wrapped up my stomach I noticed my neck. Small red splotches covered my shoulder and lower neck.
It was from Vira’s strange bites. I still couldn’t figure out what she was doing.
But I liked it.
While I had been cleaning myself up, Vira was pleading for me come out.
“Sadie, Sadie please...I’m sorry, please Sadie! I didn’t mean to hurt you! Please!!!” I heard her wail. Eventually I just tuned her out. But after I while I noticed that it was dead silent.
I opened the door quietly. I took a hesitant step out, and almost tripped over the lump on the ground. Once I had steadied myself, I bent down to see what I had tripped over.
It was Vira. She was cuddled up in a blanket right outside the door. I lay down next to her on the cold, hardwood floor. I adjusted so that her head was lying right next to mine. It was just like at the sleepover.
I felt a sudden urge arise inside me. I didn’t know what exactly I was doing, but I carefully got on top of her. I wanted her. I wanted to know l what it was like to kiss her. I slowly lowered my head down to hers. My lips barely brushed against hers. I pulled back blushingly madly. Vira didn’t even move.
I bent down again, but this time, I held the kiss for longer. It was so sweet, the feeling of her lips against mine. It felt so right…..so…..perfect.
Vira stirred a bit. I jumped off of her, but she was still asleep.
Thank the Lord.
I lay back down and sighed. What was I going about this?
I woke up twice more that night. Once I was in Vira’s arms as she carried me and carefully set me on the bed. I closed my eyes and waited for the feeling of her getting into the bed next to me, but it never came. I sat up and saw her about to walk out of the room.
“Where are you going?” I whispered.
She turned to face me. She didn’t say anything for a few minutes, and then turned and walked out the bedroom door.
I was too tired to register what had happened, so I flopped over and fell asleep again.
The second time I was woken up when Vira came back into the room and got into the bed not-so-subtlety. I rolled over so that I was facing her. Blood stained her lips and T-shirt.
“Feeding again?” I asked tiredly.
“What is it even like”
“Being a vampire?”
“It sucks.” She stopped, “and I wasn’t even trying to funny when I said that….”
“I hate having to take blood from people so that I can live. And, I seriously wouldn’t do it if I wasn’t…..you know…..addicted.”
There was a pause.
“Are you going to go to the Halloween dance?” she asked unexpectedly.
I had completely forgotten about that.
“Yeah I guess so. Are you?”
“Hell yeah! It’s the only day of the year where I can actually be me without scaring people,”
“I’m going to hit the hay. Night Sadie,” and with that she rolled over and fell asleep. I curled up next to her, but she adjusted so that I wasn’t touching her. I assumed that this was not on purpose and threw my arms around her waist. She sat up.
“Sadie stop,” she glared at me, “I don’t want to hurt you again,”
I retreated to the other bed, and stared at her with my best puppy dog face.
“Oh come on Sadie. Now you’re making me feel guilty,”
“Alright. Alright.” She said and invited me back into the bed.
The next few days leading up to the dance were really weird.
At P.E. while I was changing, Francesca noticed the scars on my waist, and screamed. All of the girls in the locker came and surrounded me.
“She looks like she got mauled by a lion!”
“Oh my god is that real?”
“What happened?” were all comments are I heard at that point.
I said the first thing that came to my mind.
“Evan and I got a little too rough the other night,”
Apparently, that was enough. All of the girls cleared out.
“Wow Sadie!” Francesca giggled. Melissa rolled her eyes.
I actually started playing football at P.E. I scored a bunch of touchdowns, mostly because the guys were too afraid that they’d crush me if they tackled me.
That’s when the weird thing happened.
Evan kissed me.
Right there in the middle of the field. In front of everybody. I just stood there while it happened. I didn’t kiss back or anything.
When it was over I still just stood there.
“See ya later,” he said and walked away.
Francesca came over to me giggling uncontrollably. I pretended to laugh with her. Melissa just shook her head. When Francesca had left, Melissa and I walked to the locker room together.
“What was that?” she asked.
“I don’t know….” I sighed.
“You have to tell him the truth. You have to tell Vira too,” she said.
And I would tell her…. Just not yet…..
At lunch the next day Tyler, one of Evan’s friends came over to our table and sat next to Vira.
“Hey girl,” he said and draped his arm around her shoulder. We all stared, completely shocked.
“Hey Tyler,” she answered and continued eating her sandwich.
Tyler looked over at me.
“I hears you and Evan are like a thing now huh? Heard you played it up pretty hzrd the other night,” he laughed.
I blushed. How fast had that spread?
“Uh yeah sure,” I said.
He took a few of Vira’s Cheetos and left.
“What? Are you two like…..?” Chloe asked Vira.
Vira laughed. “Psh.NO. He sits next to me History. We became friends,” she said licking the orange Cheeto dust off her fingers.
Sigh of relief. She was still up for grabs...
